During the decade of the 1880s, Vincent van Gogh frequently spent the month of September studying and recording the objects and activities associated with the last days of summer and the first days of autumn. His fascination with this time of year resulted in groups of images depicting the bounties and labors of the harvest and the light and atmosphere of long summer evenings. Particular attention will be paid to one of van Gogh’s most famous September paintings: Vincent’s Bedroom in Arles on view at the Art Institute of Chicago.
