Called to Reckon: Replacing History and Reclaiming Mission at a Midwestern College (SIU Press, 2026) is a collection of essays by Augustana College faculty, staff, and alumni that explores the relationship between Augustana College and the Quad-Cities community in light of the college’s mission to love and serve the neighbor. Focusing on populations such as its immigrant founders, students of color, and queer members of the community, the book asks how well the college has lived out its mission by considering moments when students, faculty, and the community challenged the institution to consider how best to enact its calling. We will share some of the stories included in the book as well as the questions and ideas these histories raise about the meaning and purpose of a liberal arts education.
