Be ready to start your career as a phlebotomy technician and EKG technician! You will gain the confidence to pursue a job in the health care field and learn new skills to increase your chance of job advancement. Train in the basic blood-drawing procedures for venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques. You will complete the class with an understanding of the skills, knowledge and level of responsibility required to perform competently as an entry-level phlebotomy technician and an EKG technician.

Prerequisite: Current statement of good health from your physician and documented proof that you are free from active tuberculosis as documented by a negative QuantiFERON® - TB Gold test. These documents must be presented to the instructor during the first class. This test may be obtained from your physician’s office or at a MercyOne Genesis Occupational Health Clinic. For clinic locations, visit 
www.mercyone.org/genesis/services/occupational-health. Hepatitis B vaccinations are not required but strongly recommended.

You are required to perform 25 venipunctures and five (5)capillaries. You will perform these skills in a phlebotomy practice lab setting, beginning with practice arms then with real arms (students practice on one another) under instructor guidance and supervision.

Phlebotomy topics include:
  • Handling, processing and documenting samples
  • OSHA guidelines and safety rules
  • Anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system
  • Basic phlebotomy techniques
  • Quality assurance and methods of quality control
You must be willing to participate with giving and receiving 12-lead hook ups.

EKG topics including:
  • 12-Lead EKG setup in a hospital or office setting
  • Anatomy of the heart, physiology and medical disease processes
  • Medical terminology
  • Medical ethics and legal aspects of patient contact
  • Bloodborne pathogens
  • Heart medications
The National Certified EKG Technician (NCET) certification exam is available upon successful completion of the class through National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Before the first class, purchase the required textbooks at the Black Hawk College Bookstore in Bldg. 1, 6600 34 Ave., Moline.
