While Quad Citians may be familiar with city founders such as Col. George Davenport and Antoine LeClaire, some of the region’s early women settlers left less of a trace in the archives. Perhaps one of the more elusive of these is George Davenport’s wife, Margaret. In this talk, Dr. Simonsen shares how her attempts to learn more about Margaret turned up, instead, the stories of other women with whom she shared her home on the island. Looking for Margaret Davenport, in the end, told us less about her origins and more about how local histories are told, shared and hidden.
